Do you have to pay tax on casino winnings?

If you play at a casino with a license in Denmark, the winnings are tax-free. This applies regardless of whether you choose one of the 6 “real” casinos in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg, Vejle and Helsingør, or whether you play at an online casino with a license from the Gambling Authority. These casinos all pay tax on their gross profit to the Danish treasury, and therefore you do not have to pay tax. You also do not have to pay tax from a casino with a license in the EU, but if you win at a casino outside the EU – regardless of whether it is an online casino with a license in Curacoa, or you win a poker tournament in Las Vegas – then the winnings are taxable in Denmark. Of course, the tax authorities are not informed of such gains, so it is your own responsibility to add them to the tax return.

If you win at a casino in another EU country, the winnings are tax-free, as is the case for winnings from Danish casinos. If you win at a casino outside the EU, the winnings are taxable as “other personal income”, and it is your own responsibility to enter the amount in section 20 of your tax return. The rules apply to both online casinos and “physical casinos”. For online casinos, it is crucial where the casino is licensed. If you play at an online casino with a license from the Bahamas, the winnings are therefore taxable in Denmark, regardless of whether you are in Denmark or not when you play.
